The Early Modern Morals Research Center studies cultural, social, political and economic aspects of history, from lifestyles to political decision-making, from work to celebration and from language use to the arts and sciences. The Center's projects and research topics cover multiple facets of human historical existence: moral systems of individuals and communities, leadership, rules, values, behaviors, habits and customs. We focus on Nordic societies, especially Sweden and Finland, as well as the cultural, political, and economic environment of Scandinavia during the years 1450-1850.

The Center hosts the annual international Gustav Wasa conference and other international conferences connected to specific research projects. The Center has an excellent infrastructure for supporting research projects and it provides a friendly and dynamic environment for academic staff, postgraduate students and visiting scholars.

Varhaismodernin ajan tutkimuskeskittymässä (Early Modern Morals – EMM) tarkastellaan ihmisiä, kulttuureja, politiikkaa ja talouselämää historiallisesta näkökulmasta. Tutkimuksen lähtökohtana on vahva empiirinen ja historiografinen painotus. Tutkimuskeskittymä kohdistaa huomionsa varhaismoderneihin yhteiskuntiin, erityisesti Ruotsiin ja Suomeen myöhäiskeskiajalta 1800-luvun jälkipuoliskolle.

Tarkasteltavat ilmiöt ulottuvat monipuolisesti elämäntavoista poliittiseen päätöksentekoon ja kielenkäytöstä normatiiviseen valvontaan. Menneisyyttä lähestytään yksilöiden ja yhteisöjen moraalijärjestelmien, ihmisryhmien hallitsemisen, sääntöjen, arvojen ja käytänteiden kautta. Jo vuosikymmeniä toiminut tutkimuskeskittymä tunnetaan monipuolisesta empiirisestä, metodologisesta ja teoreettisesta asiantuntemuksestaan.
